Final Visit to J&K: Election Commission's Last Assessment Before Announcing Lok Sabha Election Dates

New Delhi, 11-03-2024 : The Election Commission convened a briefing session in the national capital on Monday, gathering over 2000 observers for the upcoming General Election to Lok Sabha and General Election to Legislative Assemblies 2024. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar is slated to address the meeting, aiming to streamline strategies for enforcing the model code during the elections. These observers, including police, general, and expenditure observers drawn from various services such as IAS, IPS, and IRS, will be tasked with monitoring the polls to ensure a “free and fair” electoral process.

In parallel, the Election Commission is scheduled to embark on its final visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday to assess the feasibility of holding polls in the Union Territory. It is anticipated that the dates for the Lok Sabha elections will be disclosed promptly thereafter. Sources indicate that following the conclusion of the assessment and the visit on Wednesday, the commission may unveil the election schedule. The Election Commission has previously conducted similar visits to Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna, Chennai, and Bhubaneshwar, engaging with regional parties and top government officials to evaluate the poll preparedness of various states.

Prior to this, on March 6, a delegation from the Election Commission of India conducted a comprehensive review meeting with all District Election Officers (DEOs), Commissioner of Police, Guwahati City, Superintendents of Police (SPs), DIGs, and other senior officials in Guwahati. The purpose of the meeting was to assess the state’s readiness for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in 2024. The Lok Sabha elections are anticipated to take place sometime between April and May this year.
