New Delhi, Sept 15: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Sunil Sharma, met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital today to hold a wide-ranging discussion on the prevailing political and security environment of the Union Territory. The meeting also focused on the devastation caused by the recent floods, with Sharma presenting a comprehensive ground assessment report highlighting the scale of destruction and the urgent need for relief measures.
Sharma, who has been actively touring flood-hit regions over the past weeks, briefed the Home Minister about the hardships faced by the people, particularly in remote and cut-off areas. He detailed the large-scale damage to homes, schools, healthcare facilities, roads, crops, and communication lines, noting that thousands of families remain displaced and in distress. Stressing that the floods have exposed vulnerabilities in infrastructure, Sharma urged the Union Government to prioritize both immediate rehabilitation and long-term resilience planning. He specifically advocated for climate-resilient infrastructure, robust disaster management frameworks, and early warning systems to mitigate future risks.
The BJP leader also brought to Shah’s attention the broader political and security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability through effective governance, strengthening democratic institutions, and encouraging greater public participation in developmental processes. Sharma flagged concerns about internal security, calling for coordinated efforts by security forces and administrative agencies to address emerging threats and safeguard the interests of the people. He underscored that political stability and responsive governance are integral to ensuring long-term peace in the region.
Highlighting the role of party workers, Sharma informed the Home Minister that BJP cadres have been actively engaged in assisting flood-hit families, distributing relief materials, and supporting local administrations in their efforts. He urged the Centre to provide timely financial and logistical support to complement these initiatives.
Responding to the briefing, Home Minister Amit Shah assured his full support to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, reiterating the Union Government’s commitment to ensuring security, promoting political stability, and enhancing disaster preparedness in the Union Territory. Shah conveyed that the Centre stands firmly with the people in this hour of crisis and will extend every possible assistance to rebuild infrastructure and restore normalcy.
Expressing gratitude to the Home Minister for his unwavering guidance and support, Sunil Sharma reaffirmed the need for seamless collaboration between the Union Government and the UT administration. He stressed that this partnership would not only deliver timely relief to flood-affected communities but also pave the way for durable peace, development, and progress across Jammu and Kashmir.
