Mumbai, July 20: The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Maharashtra, has suspended its planned statewide protest scheduled for July 20 following legal developments in the case involving the alleged assault of doctors. However, the association has warned that an indefinite strike from August 9 remains a possibility if concrete measures are not introduced to improve the safety of healthcare professionals.
The decision came after the Bombay High Court stayed the bail granted to a Shiv Sena corporator accused in the assault case, a move that the medical fraternity viewed as an important legal step.
Growing Concern Over Violence Against Doctors
Incidents of violence against doctors and hospital staff have remained a major concern across India. Medical professionals have repeatedly demanded stricter enforcement of existing laws and stronger security arrangements in hospitals.
The Maharashtra IMA stated that while it has temporarily withdrawn the July 20 agitation, the broader issue of attacks on healthcare workers remains unresolved.
Association representatives stressed that hospitals should be safe workplaces where doctors can perform their duties without fear of physical assault or intimidation.
Demands Raised by Medical Community
The IMA has urged authorities to introduce stronger security measures, including improved surveillance systems, rapid police response mechanisms, and strict punishment for those involved in attacks on healthcare workers.
Doctors have argued that increasing incidents of violence negatively affect patient care by creating stress among healthcare professionals and discouraging young doctors from working in high-pressure government hospitals.
High Court Development
The High Court’s intervention was viewed positively by the association, leading it to suspend the immediate protest. Nevertheless, the IMA emphasized that long-term reforms are still necessary.
According to the association, the postponement should not be interpreted as the end of the campaign. Instead, it represents an opportunity for the government to initiate meaningful discussions with medical professionals and implement stronger legal safeguards.
Possible Strike in August
IMA Maharashtra has warned that if satisfactory action is not taken before August 9, doctors across the state may begin an indefinite strike while ensuring emergency medical services remain operational.
Healthcare experts have noted that maintaining the safety of doctors is essential for ensuring uninterrupted patient care and sustaining public confidence in the healthcare system.
The association reiterated that its objective is not to disrupt healthcare services but to secure a safer working environment for doctors, nurses, and all frontline healthcare personnel.
