India, May 18 : Indian regional cinema received a major boost at the 79th Cannes Film Festival after the restored 4K version of the Malayalam cult classic Amma Ariyan received a standing ovation during its screening.
Directed by legendary filmmaker John Abraham, the film returned to international audiences nearly four decades after its original release. The restoration project was hailed as an important effort in preserving Indian cinematic heritage.
Members of the restoration team, editors and actors associated with the project attended the screening, where international critics praised the film’s emotional depth, political commentary and experimental storytelling style.
Film scholars noted that the Cannes recognition highlighted the growing appreciation for regional Indian cinema beyond mainstream Bollywood productions. The screening also renewed interest among younger audiences who had previously only heard about the film through academic and cinephile circles.
Industry experts believe the global response to “Amma Ariyan” could encourage restoration efforts for other Indian classics that remain inaccessible due to deteriorating prints and lack of preservation funding.
The success of the restored film comes at a time when Indian cinema is expanding its international presence through streaming platforms, film festivals and global collaborations.
