DENVER — Jake McCarthy produced the biggest moment of the night with a decisive grand slam as the Colorado Rockies defeated the New York Mets 6-2 on Thursday, snapping a frustrating six-game losing streak.
Colorado entered the contest desperate for a breakthrough after struggling throughout the homestand. The victory helped the club avoid one of the worst home stretches in franchise history and gave the team a much-needed confidence boost heading into its next series.
Rockies Finally Break Through at Home
The contest remained tightly balanced for much of the evening, with both teams locked at 2-2 entering the eighth inning. Colorado’s offense had been quiet during recent games, but the breakthrough finally arrived when McCarthy stepped to the plate with the bases loaded.
The outfielder crushed a drive toward right field that barely stayed inside the foul pole for a grand slam. Umpires reviewed the hit before confirming the call, sending the home crowd into celebration.
McCarthy’s blast marked his second homer in consecutive games after enduring a lengthy power drought. Before this series, he had gone 22 appearances without hitting a home run.
McCarthy Continues Impressive Form
In addition to the grand slam, McCarthy also tied the score earlier in the sixth inning with a run-scoring double to center field. He finished the night with five RBIs, matching the best single-game output of his career.
The hitter has been one of Colorado’s most productive players over the past month, maintaining a strong batting average since early April and providing consistency in the middle of the lineup.
Bullpen Seals Important Victory
Colorado’s relief pitchers also played a crucial role in the result. Antonio Senzatela earned the win after delivering two shutout innings, while the bullpen combined to limit New York to only one hit over the final 3 1/3 innings.
The Mets were unable to recover after the eighth-inning collapse despite earlier RBI contributions from Andy Ibáñez and Tyrone Taylor.
Reliever Craig Kimbrel suffered the defeat after surrendering the game-changing grand slam, which significantly raised his earned run average.
Next Up for Both Clubs
The Rockies now turn their attention to a matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies, with pitcher Chase Dollander expected to start Friday’s opener.
Meanwhile, the Mets will travel to face the Arizona Diamondbacks, where Nolan McLean is scheduled to take the mound in the series opener.
