Mehbooba Mufti Urges PM Modi to Reevaluate Removal of Additional Duties on US Apples and Walnuts, Citing Impending Crisis for J&K’s Horticulture Sector

11-09-2023 : Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed deep concern and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider the recent decision to eliminate additional duties on imported apples, walnuts, and almonds from the United States. She has emphasized that this move could inflict severe damage upon the horticulture sector in the region of Jammu and Kashmir.

Last week, the Indian government made the announcement to revoke the additional tariffs imposed on various US products, including apples, walnuts, and almonds, which were initially imposed in 2019 as a countermeasure in response to the United States’ decision to increase tariffs on specific steel and aluminum products.

Mehbooba Mufti, a former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, took to social media to voice her concerns, asserting that the decision to remove these additional duties could have devastating consequences for local growers in J&K who are already struggling with significant losses incurred since 2019. She expressed hope that the Prime Minister’s Office (@PMOIndia) would reconsider this decision.
