Jammu, Oct 16: BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Wednesday came down heavily on the National Conference–Congress alliance government, accusing it of betraying the people of Jammu and Kashmir during its one year in office. Calling it a “regime of deception, unfulfilled promises, and misplaced priorities,” Chugh said the government led by Omar Abdullah has failed to deliver on every major assurance it made to the public during the 2024 Assembly elections.
In a strongly worded statement, Chugh said that the NC leadership particularly Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah misled the people with lofty guarantees that have remained only on paper. “They made promises of social welfare and development, but a year later, the people are still waiting for relief. It has been a government of slogans, not service,” he remarked.
Highlighting key unfulfilled commitments, Chugh said the much-publicized promise of 12 free LPG cylinders per year for poor households has not materialized. “Women continue to bear the brunt of rising prices, running their kitchens on expensive gas cylinders while the government hides behind excuses and bureaucratic delays,” he said.
Chugh further slammed the government over its failure to provide 200 units of free electricity and waive pending arrears as promised. “Instead of relief, the people have been burdened with frequent power cuts and inflated bills. The NC government has deepened the misery of common households rather than easing it,” he stated.
Accusing the regime of failing the youth, Chugh pointed out that the pledge to provide one lakh jobs and enact a Youth Employment Generation Act within three months has been completely abandoned. “Young people feel betrayed. There is neither a roadmap nor a policy framework. What they got instead is hollow rhetoric and political speeches,” he said.
On the issue of women’s empowerment, Chugh remarked that the much-hyped promise of free public transport for women has turned out to be a token gesture. “Beyond a few routes in Srinagar and Jammu, there is nothing on the ground. Women continue to pay fares while the government boasts of a scheme that barely exists,” he said.
The BJP leader also took aim at the government’s failure to fulfill its commitments in tourism, agriculture, and horticulture. “The NC had promised to grant industry status to tourism and establish cold storage facilities and MSP-like mechanisms for apple growers and saffron cultivators. But there are no incentives, no infrastructure, and no policy action. Houseboat owners, hoteliers, and farmers are left in despair as their demands gather dust in government files,” he asserted.
Chugh criticized the government’s inaction in the education and health sectors as well. “They spoke about free education up to the university level, setting up two new skill universities, and creating a medical trust for free healthcare. One year down the line, not a single notification has been issued, nor has any institution been established. The promises remain confined to press releases,” he said.
Touching upon the sensitive issue of Kashmiri Pandit rehabilitation, Chugh accused the NC government of betraying the displaced community once again. “They had assured a dignified return, but no roadmap, no land allocation, and no housing schemes have been initiated. It is another tragic instance of broken trust,” he added.
Concluding his remarks, Chugh said the NC government continues to engage in blame games against New Delhi while neglecting governance and public welfare. “Jammu and Kashmir deserves accountability, not excuses. The people will not forget this betrayal. The alliance government has lost the moral right to rule after one year of deception,” Chugh asserted.
