NCERT Expands AI and Digital Literacy Curriculum for School Students Nationwide

Revised school curriculum places greater emphasis on artificial intelligence, coding, cybersecurity and responsible digital citizenship to prepare learners for the evolving technology landscape.

New Delhi, July 10: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has expanded its Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Literacy curriculum for schools, marking another significant step towards modernising classroom education in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The revised curriculum introduces age-appropriate learning modules covering artificial intelligence, computational thinking, coding fundamentals, cybersecurity, digital ethics and responsible use of emerging technologies. The initiative aims to equip students with practical digital skills while encouraging innovation, creativity and critical thinking.

Officials said the updated curriculum has been designed to ensure that students understand not only how digital technologies function but also how they influence society, employment, governance and everyday life.

The new framework promotes experiential learning through project-based activities, coding exercises, interactive simulations and collaborative classroom assignments. Rather than relying solely on textbook instruction, students will participate in hands-on learning experiences that develop analytical and problem-solving abilities.

NCERT has also incorporated digital citizenship into the curriculum, highlighting issues such as online safety, cyberbullying, misinformation, data privacy and ethical use of artificial intelligence. Educators believe these topics have become increasingly important as children spend more time using digital platforms.

Teacher capacity building forms a major component of the initiative. Training programmes will help educators understand AI concepts, digital teaching tools and effective classroom practices. Schools will receive guidance on integrating technology into everyday learning without replacing the role of teachers.

The curriculum has been developed with flexibility in mind, enabling schools to adapt implementation according to available infrastructure. Institutions with advanced digital facilities can introduce practical laboratory sessions, while schools with limited resources may initially rely on blended learning methods.

Education experts have welcomed the emphasis on computational thinking from an early stage, arguing that such skills are becoming essential across nearly every profession. Beyond preparing students for careers in technology, AI education is expected to improve logical reasoning, creativity and collaborative problem-solving.

Parents have also shown growing interest in digital education, recognising that future employment opportunities will increasingly require familiarity with emerging technologies. However, experts caution that digital learning should complement—not replace traditional classroom teaching and foundational literacy.

The initiative supports the broader objective of reducing the digital divide by encouraging states to improve internet connectivity, digital classrooms and teacher training. Central and state governments are expected to collaborate in strengthening educational infrastructure over the coming years.

Industry representatives have welcomed the revised curriculum, noting that India’s growing digital economy will require a workforce equipped with advanced technological competencies. Early exposure to AI and digital tools is expected to help students adapt more easily to higher education and future employment.

Educationists have emphasised that the curriculum is not intended solely for students interested in computer science. Instead, it seeks to develop digital awareness among learners from all academic backgrounds, recognising that technology now influences every field—from healthcare and agriculture to law, finance and the arts.

The revised curriculum also encourages innovation through school-level projects, hackathons, coding competitions and interdisciplinary learning activities. Such initiatives are expected to foster curiosity, entrepreneurship and collaborative learning among students.

While implementation challenges remain, particularly in rural and resource-constrained schools, education experts believe the initiative represents an important milestone in preparing Indian students for the demands of a rapidly evolving digital world.
