New Delhi, July 21 : A fresh wave of protests swept across several states on Monday as students, NEET aspirants, lawyers and members of civil society organisations demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the country’s education system. Demonstrators expressed frustration over recurring examination controversies, recruitment delays and what they described as the government’s failure to restore confidence among students.
According to PTI, protests were reported from Solan in Himachal Pradesh and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra, where participants highlighted concerns over repeated allegations of examination paper leaks and the uncertainty surrounding competitive examinations. Protesters said the repeated controversies have affected the mental well being, academic future and career prospects of millions of students across the country.
Students Rally in Solan Against Examination Controversies
In Solan, students from organisations representing Kinnaur and Lahaul Spiti assembled at Children’s Park before holding a demonstration demanding accountability from the Union Education Ministry. Protesters raised slogans seeking the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan and urged the Centre to take stronger action to prevent examination related irregularities.
Earlier in the day, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) also organised a protest in the town. The gathering witnessed participation from students, youth groups, local residents and representatives of several organisations, reflecting widespread concern over the state of the education system.
Participants alleged that recurring controversies involving competitive examinations have eroded public trust and placed immense pressure on students preparing for crucial entrance and recruitment tests.
NEET Aspirants Highlight Mental and Financial Burden
Several students shared their concerns during the protest, saying repeated paper leak allegations and re-examinations have disrupted academic planning and increased emotional stress.
Bhavika, a NEET aspirant who joined the demonstration, said students and their families have paid a heavy price because of repeated examination controversies. She noted that months of preparation become uncertain whenever allegations of irregularities emerge, forcing candidates to face additional mental and financial challenges.
Protesters argued that the education system requires comprehensive reforms to ensure fairness, transparency and timely conduct of examinations.
Questions Raised Over Student Welfare and Recruitment
Demonstrators also criticised what they described as the government’s inadequate response to concerns arising from the NEET UG controversy. They alleged that several students have suffered severe emotional distress following examination-related disputes and called for stronger institutional support for aspirants.
The protesters further pointed to delays in government recruitment despite numerous vacancies across departments. According to participants, prolonged recruitment processes combined with allegations of irregularities have weakened confidence among young job seekers.
Many urged authorities to introduce stricter safeguards against paper leaks and ensure that recruitment examinations are conducted in a transparent and credible manner.
Support Extended to Sonam Wangchuk
The protests also reflected support for climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is continuing his agitation in Delhi.
Puran Chand, one of the demonstrators in Solan, expressed solidarity with Wangchuk and reiterated demands for greater accountability from the Union government. He said the concerns raised by students and youth deserve immediate attention rather than prolonged delays.
Another NEET aspirant, Gurpreet Singh, remarked that repeated paper leak allegations and recruitment scams have shaken the confidence of lakhs of young people who invest years preparing for competitive examinations. According to him, such issues go beyond administrative lapses and directly affect the aspirations of students.
Demonstration Held in Maharashtra
In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, students and advocates gathered at Kranti Chowk to protest against alleged irregularities in the education sector. Participants questioned why responsibility had not been clearly fixed in cases involving examination paper leaks and demanded greater transparency in official investigations.
Several protesters said students deserve clear answers regarding measures being taken to prevent future controversies and restore the credibility of entrance examinations.
Government Urged to Address Core Issues
Participants also criticised what they viewed as the government’s silence regarding Wangchuk’s ongoing hunger strike. They argued that issues concerning students and education require prompt political attention and meaningful dialogue.
One protester remarked that authorities had acted swiftly in removing Wangchuk from the protest site at Jantar Mantar but had not shown the same urgency in addressing concerns surrounding examination reforms and student welfare.
The demonstrator added that accountability should accompany responsibility in public office and maintained that leadership changes become necessary when systemic failures continue without effective corrective measures.
Lawyers Condemn Police Action
Advocates participating in the Maharashtra protest also voiced concern over police action against participants in the Cockroach Janta Party-led ‘Sansad Chalo’ march held in New Delhi.
They called for democratic space to be protected and urged the government to engage constructively with protesters rather than relying on enforcement measures.
Growing Demand for Examination Reforms
The demonstrations underscore growing public concern over the credibility of competitive examinations in India. Students and youth organisations have continued to demand stronger safeguards against paper leaks, faster recruitment processes and transparent mechanisms to ensure fairness in examinations.
Protesters maintained that restoring trust in the education system will require comprehensive reforms, strict action against those responsible for examination irregularities and timely communication from authorities to reassure millions of aspiring students.
