Nifty 50 Companies Post Strongest Profit Growth in 10 Quarters

Corporate earnings improved sharply in the June quarter, with broad-based growth across several sectors strengthening the outlook for India Inc.

NEW DELHI, Aug 19: India’s leading companies delivered a strong earnings performance in the June quarter of 2026, with aggregate profit growth among Nifty 50 firms reaching its highest level in 10 quarters, according to an analysis reported on Tuesday.

Nifty 50 companies recorded an average profit growth of about 18 per cent during the quarter, reflecting stronger than expected corporate performance despite pressure on operating margins. The improvement was spread across several segments of the economy, indicating that the recovery was not limited to a handful of large companies.

Analysts said expectations for the rest of the financial year have also improved, supported by stronger consumption, credit expansion and investment activity. Festive-season demand is expected to provide another boost to consumer-facing businesses in the coming months.

Nineteen sectors reportedly exceeded earnings expectations during the quarter, while the ratio of analyst upgrades to downgrades improved to 1.5. The trend suggests that market expectations for corporate earnings are becoming more positive.

Large companies including Hindalco, Reliance Industries, JSW Steel, ONGC and Bharti Airtel were among the major contributors to the overall earnings performance.

Financial institutions also benefited from faster credit growth and relatively low credit costs, while non-bank lenders reported stronger asset-management activity.

However, challenges remain for some industries. Oil marketing companies faced pressure from crude-price volatility, while higher input costs continued to affect margins in areas such as automobiles, consumer goods, logistics and information technology.

Despite these concerns, the broader earnings picture has strengthened expectations that corporate profitability could remain resilient through the rest of 2026.

The performance is being closely watched by investors as companies prepare for the next phase of the financial year amid changing global commodity prices, borrowing costs and consumer demand.
