‘Lessons from Article 370’: Omar Abdullah Calls for Caution in Poll Reform Debate

Jammu, Dec 13: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has weighed in on the contentious proposal of ‘One Nation, One Election,’ urging for an open and transparent debate in Parliament. Speaking to a news agency, Abdullah expressed concerns about the approach that might be taken during the parliamentary discussion, drawing a parallel to the handling of Article 370 in 2019.

“It has not yet come before Parliament. When it does, it should be thoroughly debated in the House,” Abdullah stated. He emphasized the importance of a democratic and inclusive dialogue, cautioning against a rushed or unilateral decision-making process akin to what transpired during the abrogation of Article 370, which stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status without broader consultations or consensus.

Abdullah further clarified the National Conference’s stance on the matter, noting that the party is yet to formalize its position. “As far as the National Conference is concerned, we will deliberate internally to form an opinion on the proposal. Once a consensus is reached, our MPs will be directed on how to cast their vote,” he added.

The Chief Minister’s remarks highlight a growing concern among opposition parties about the potential centralization of power under the guise of electoral reform. The concept of ‘One Nation, One Election,’ which advocates for simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, has drawn both support and skepticism across the political spectrum. Proponents argue it would streamline governance and reduce electoral costs, while critics fear it may undermine federalism and disproportionately benefit national parties.

Abdullah’s call for open debate underscores the need for comprehensive discussions to address these concerns and ensure that any decision reflects the diverse voices within the country. His reference to Article 370 serves as a reminder of the political and emotional sensitivities in Jammu and Kashmir, making it a critical lens through which the region views national policy decisions.
