New Delhi, Aug 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced a new initiative to provide free online coaching for students preparing for competitive examinations, saying the move would help reduce the financial pressure faced by families due to expensive coaching services.
Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on India’s 80th Independence Day, Modi said the rising cost of private coaching had become a significant burden, particularly for poor and middle-class families.
Under the proposed initiative, students will be able to access preparation support remotely instead of having to relocate to major education hubs or spend heavily on private coaching. The government plans to use digital infrastructure and qualified teachers to expand access to learning resources.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns over the increasing dependence of students on coaching institutes for entrance and recruitment examinations. Competitive tests such as engineering, medical and government recruitment examinations often require specialised preparation, leading many families to spend substantial amounts on coaching.
The online model is expected to widen access to academic guidance for students living in smaller towns and rural areas, where specialised coaching facilities may be limited.
The initiative also reflects the government’s broader emphasis on using technology to make education more accessible. Digital learning platforms can allow students to study from home and access educational material without the additional costs associated with accommodation and travel.
The move could particularly benefit students who are unable to afford private coaching or move to cities for exam preparation. By providing structured online resources and access to experienced teachers, the government intends to create a more equitable preparation ecosystem.
The announcement is expected to draw attention from students and parents preparing for major competitive examinations, as coaching costs have become an important factor in educational decision-making.
