New Delhi, July 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid heartfelt tributes to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the 1999 Kargil War, describing their courage as an everlasting source of inspiration for the nation. Addressing the 136th edition of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, the Prime Minister said Kargil Vijay Diwas is a reminder of the unmatched determination and patriotism shown by India’s armed forces under the most challenging conditions.
Marking the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas, Modi said the nation bows in respect to every soldier who defended the country’s sovereignty during Operation Vijay. He noted that the difficult terrain, freezing temperatures and relentless enemy attacks could not weaken the spirit of India’s troops, whose bravery ensured victory in one of the country’s most significant military campaigns.
“The courage displayed by our soldiers in Kargil continues to inspire every Indian. Their sacrifice for the nation can never be forgotten,” the Prime Minister said, while remembering the martyrs and veterans who participated in the conflict.
Shaurya Vijay Yatra Celebrates Spirit of National Unity
The Prime Minister also highlighted the ongoing Shaurya Vijay Yatra, a nationwide motorcycle expedition organised to commemorate Kargil Vijay Diwas. The journey began on July 14 from the National War Memorial in New Delhi and is scheduled to conclude at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, where the fiercest battles of the war were fought.
Carrying the message “One Ride, One Nation, One Salute,” the rally honours the sacrifices of India’s armed forces while promoting patriotism among citizens across the country. Modi said such initiatives help preserve the memories of the nation’s heroes and inspire younger generations to value the sacrifices made for India’s freedom and security.
India Strengthening Self-Reliant Defence Capabilities
During his address, the Prime Minister underlined India’s steady progress towards defence self-reliance, stating that the country’s indigenous military manufacturing programme is producing world class platforms and technologies.
He referred to the recent commissioning of INS Mahendragiri, the sixth stealth frigate under the Project 17A Nilgiri-class programme, as a major milestone in India’s naval modernisation.
According to Modi, the warship has been designed and built entirely in India with more than 75 per cent indigenous content, reflecting the success of the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative in the defence sector.
INS Mahendragiri has been equipped with advanced combat systems, modern sensors, electronic warfare capabilities and sophisticated weapon platforms that enable it to carry out anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine missions. Besides combat operations, the vessel can also undertake humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, maritime security and search-and-rescue operations.
DRDO Achievements Reflect India’s Technological Progress
The Prime Minister also praised scientists and engineers of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for achieving significant milestones in indigenous missile development.
He noted the successful test of the Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket, describing it as another example of India’s growing expertise in advanced defence technology.
Modi further referred to the successful testing of the Kusha missile, saying these achievements demonstrate the capability of Indian scientists to develop sophisticated weapon systems that strengthen national security.
He credited the research community, defence engineers and manufacturing sector for contributing to India’s expanding military capabilities, adding that these innovations are reinforcing the country’s strategic preparedness.
India’s Defence Exports Witness Rising International Confidence
Highlighting India’s expanding role in the global defence market, the Prime Minister said the country’s military equipment is receiving increasing recognition from friendly nations.
He stated that India’s defence production, exports and strategic partnerships have witnessed remarkable growth over the past few years, helping position the country as a reliable defence partner.
Referring to his recent visit to Indonesia, Modi said both countries reached significant understandings regarding the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the Astra air-to-air missile programme. Such agreements, he said, reflect growing confidence among international partners in India’s defence manufacturing capabilities.
The Prime Minister added that India’s emphasis on indigenous technology, combined with high-quality production standards, has strengthened the country’s reputation as a dependable supplier of modern defence systems.
Kargil Victory Continues to Inspire the Nation
Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on July 26 to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistani intruders during the 1999 Kargil War. The conflict witnessed extraordinary acts of courage by Indian soldiers who recaptured strategic mountain positions after weeks of intense fighting in the challenging Himalayan terrain.
The day serves as a tribute to the armed forces and honours the supreme sacrifice made by hundreds of soldiers during Operation Vijay. Across the country, memorial events, tributes and ceremonies are organised annually to remember the bravery and dedication of those who defended India’s territorial integrity.
