New Delhi, Aug 01 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi and newly appointed UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham on Friday reaffirmed their commitment to elevating bilateral relations, with both leaders agreeing to expand cooperation across multiple sectors and maximise the benefits of the recently implemented trade agreement between the two countries.
During a telephone conversation, Modi congratulated Burnham on assuming office and wished him success in his new role. The discussion covered a wide range of issues, including trade, investment, technology, defence, clean energy, education and people-to-people exchanges.
Sharing details of the conversation on social media, Modi said both leaders were determined to strengthen cooperation through the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. He noted that both governments would work closely to unlock the full economic potential of the recently operationalised India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), creating fresh opportunities for businesses and citizens in both nations.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of collaboration in emerging sectors such as innovation, advanced technology and security, describing these areas as key pillars of the expanding relationship between New Delhi and London.
According to a statement issued by the British government, Burnham described the UK-India relationship as one of immense importance, emphasising its positive contribution to communities across Britain. He outlined his government’s intention to further strengthen ties under the proposed UK-India Vision 2035 framework, which aims to broaden long-term cooperation in strategic and economic areas.
The British Prime Minister also acknowledged the significant contribution of the Indian diaspora to the UK’s economy, culture and society. Modi, in turn, referred to the historic connection between Manchester and Ahmedabad, often called the “Manchester of India” because of its textile heritage, as an example of the enduring links between the two countries.
Trade featured prominently in the discussions, with both leaders recognising the importance of the newly introduced bilateral trade pact. They agreed that the agreement would open new avenues for investment, boost business partnerships and generate employment and economic growth on both sides.
The leaders also reiterated their shared commitment to maintaining close coordination on global and regional issues while expanding cooperation in defence, clean energy initiatives and educational exchanges.
The conversation marked the first official interaction between Modi and Burnham since the latter assumed office, signalling a shared resolve to further strengthen one of India’s most significant strategic partnerships in Europe. Both sides expressed confidence that sustained engagement and deeper collaboration would deliver long-term benefits for businesses, institutions and citizens in both countries.
