NEW DELHI, Aug 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to those affected by the Partition of 1947, recalling the immense suffering, displacement and loss experienced during the division of the country.
Marking Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on the eve of Independence Day, Modi remembered the courage of people whose lives were disrupted by the events surrounding Partition.
The Modi government has observed August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day since 2021 to honour those who lost their lives during the communal violence, displacement and mass migration that followed the division of the country.
In a message on X, the Prime Minister said Partition left families uprooted, separated loved ones and caused immense suffering. He also highlighted the resilience of those who managed to rebuild their lives despite the hardships they faced.
Modi said many people transformed adversity into achievement and went on to contribute significantly to the nation’s progress. Their experiences, he added, remain a reminder of the enduring strength of the human spirit.
The Prime Minister called for greater efforts to preserve harmony and brotherhood across the country. He also urged citizens to strengthen the spirit of goodwill and unity while working collectively towards the goal of a ‘Viksit Bharat’.
India will celebrate its Independence Day on Saturday, with the country preparing to mark the 79th anniversary of Independence.
