BHABNIPUR-SORBHOG (Assam), Apr 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched a sharp political attack on the Congress during an election rally in Assam’s Barpeta district, accusing the party of aligning its stance with Pakistan and jeopardising national security.
Referring to India’s counter-terror efforts, Modi said his government has taken decisive action against terror infrastructure across the border, while alleging that the opposition continues to adopt positions that weaken the country’s security interests.
On governance, the Prime Minister criticised Congress for what he described as a short-sighted approach focused on immediate gains, contrasting it with the BJP’s emphasis on long-term, inclusive development. He claimed that previous policies often enabled corruption, whereas current strategies aim at sustainable progress across all sections of society.
Highlighting defence welfare, Modi pointed to the implementation of the One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme, accusing earlier governments of ignoring the demands of armed forces personnel. He said the BJP has prioritised justice for those serving the nation.
Speaking on Assam’s progress, Modi credited the restoration of peace and stability in the state to sustained efforts over the past decade, including the execution of key peace accords. He noted that improved security conditions have paved the way for accelerated development.
Appealing to voters, he urged them to support continuity in governance to maintain the state’s growth trajectory. Addressing women voters, Modi reiterated that a 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament is planned to be implemented from the 2029 general elections, encouraging public support for the initiative.
Polling for Assam’s 126-member Assembly is scheduled for April 9, with results to be declared on May 4.
