POWERGRID, Nepal Electricity Authority Ink Pact to Develop High Capacity Cross Border Power Transmission Corridor

The new transmission corridors Inaruwa New Purnea and Lamki Bareilly to boost electricity trade, regional energy security, and economic growth across India and Nepal.

India, Oct 30 : Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, has signed a Joint Venture and Shareholders’ Agreement with the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to develop a high-capacity cross border power transmission system between India and Nepal.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Shri Kulman Ghising, Hon’ble Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation of Nepal, and Shri Manohar Lal, Hon’ble Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Government of India. Also present were Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power), Government of India, Dr. R. K. Tyagi, CMD, POWERGRID, and Dr. Yatindra Dwivedi, Director (Personnel), POWERGRID.

The proposed cross border transmission projects include:

Inaruwa (Nepal) – New Purnea (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) Transmission Link

Lamki (Dododhara) (Nepal) – Bareilly (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) Transmission Link

Once operational, these strategic transmission corridors will significantly enhance electricity exchange between India and Nepal, strengthen regional energy security, improve grid stability, and contribute to sustained economic growth in both nations.

As of October 15, 2025, POWERGRID operates 287 substations, over 1,80,864 circuit kilometres of transmission lines, and 5,81,831 MVA of transformation capacity. Leveraging advanced technologies, automation, and digital solutions, the company continues to maintain an average system availability of 99.83%, underscoring its operational excellence and commitment to energy reliability.
