NEW DELHI, July 24: President Droupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu, bringing his tenure in the Union Council of Ministers to an immediate end. The decision was taken following the recommendation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to an official statement issued on Friday.
The statement confirmed that the President approved Bittu’s resignation from the Union Council of Ministers with immediate effect. President Murmu is currently on a three-nation overseas visit, but the constitutional process was completed as per established procedures.
Ravneet Singh Bittu had been serving as the Minister of State for Railways and the Ministry of Food Processing Industries since 2024. During his tenure, he represented the government in matters related to railway development and initiatives aimed at strengthening India’s food processing sector.
Political observers believe Bittu’s resignation is linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s preparations for the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections scheduled next year. With the state expected to witness an intense political contest, the BJP is likely to assign him a more active organisational and campaign role to strengthen the party’s presence in Punjab.
A prominent political leader from Punjab, Bittu comes from a family with a significant political legacy. He is the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, whose leadership played a crucial role in restoring normalcy in the state during a challenging period.
Bittu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2024 after ending his long association with the Congress. Following his induction into the BJP, he contested the Lok Sabha elections but was unable to secure a victory.
Despite the electoral setback, the party continued to place confidence in his leadership. He was subsequently nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan to fill the vacancy created after senior Congress leader K. C. Venugopal vacated the seat.
His induction into the Upper House enabled him to continue serving in Parliament while also becoming a member of the Union Council of Ministers. As Minister of State, he handled responsibilities in two important ministries and participated in several government initiatives during his tenure.
Although no official reason has been cited for the resignation, political analysts see the move as part of the BJP’s broader strategy to deploy experienced leaders in states heading for elections. Punjab remains a key electoral battleground, and the party is expected to intensify its campaign in the months ahead.
With Bittu stepping down from ministerial responsibilities, attention will now shift to the government’s next decision regarding the vacant portfolios and the BJP’s organisational plans in Punjab. His future political role is likely to revolve around strengthening the party’s grassroots network and preparing for the high-stakes Assembly polls.
