PRAYAGRAJ (UP), Aug 8: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday described India’s young population as the country’s biggest strength, asserting that its potential is unmatched globally.
Addressing the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme at KP Ground in Prayagraj, Gandhi told students that young Indians represent the nation’s power and pride. He said his remarks were intended for people across the country, while focusing particularly on the challenges faced by students and job seekers.
Gandhi said India has around 40 crore young people and called them the country’s “greatest strength”. Comparing India’s demographic potential with global powers such as the United States, China and Russia, he maintained that Indian youth possess distinctive capabilities.
During his address, Gandhi said he wanted to discuss three key issues “dard” (pain), “data” and “daulat” (wealth). He used the occasion to raise concerns over the growing difficulties faced by students in turning educational qualifications into employment opportunities.
The Congress leader questioned the value of academic certificates when they fail to translate into jobs. He argued that young people are facing a difficult employment landscape, with limited opportunities across several sectors.
Gandhi attributed the situation to multiple factors, including weakening manufacturing activity, difficulties in obtaining loans, examination paper leaks and the growing use of artificial intelligence in workplaces.
He also referred to recent student demonstrations across the country, saying young people had challenged their fears and brought attention to issues affecting their future. Gandhi urged students to pursue change through peaceful means rather than hatred or violence.
“We will never resort to hatred or violence. We will change the system with love and affection,” he said, encouraging the gathering to adopt a similar approach.
A large number of students and competitive examination aspirants attended the Prayagraj event despite waterlogging and muddy conditions at the venue. Many participants raised concerns about hostel facilities and problems associated with competitive examinations.
The programme was preceded by a motorcycle rally organised by the Congress in Prayagraj on Friday. The rally was led by Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai as the party mobilised support ahead of Gandhi’s student-focused programme.
Dance performances by rappers from Mumbai were also organised before Gandhi addressed the gathering.
The event provided students and examination aspirants an opportunity to highlight concerns over education, employment and competitive examinations, issues that have increasingly featured in political debates surrounding India’s young population.
