New Delhi, 21 July : Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, along with several opposition MPs, met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and requested a detailed discussion in Parliament over the alleged mistreatment of students during recent protests and the government’s response to examination related concerns.
The opposition delegation met the Speaker at his office before the commencement of House proceedings during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. The leaders raised concerns over the situation involving students who have been protesting against alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and demanded that their issues be discussed on the floor of the House.
The delegation included MPs from various opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena (UBT), and other INDIA bloc constituents.
In a post shared on social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi said the Opposition had urged the Speaker to allow Parliament to take up the matter for discussion.
Gandhi alleged that students had faced harsh action while raising questions about their future and criticised the government for what he described as a lack of accountability over the examination crisis.
He said Parliament must provide a platform to address issues affecting the youth and assured that the Opposition would continue raising students’ concerns both inside and outside the House.
Opposition Demands Government Response in Parliament
Congress leaders said they want the government to respond to allegations related to examination irregularities and the concerns of students.
Congress whip in the Lok Sabha Manickam Tagore stated that the Opposition delegation sought a discussion on the alleged action against students during protests over the paper leak issue.
He also demanded that Union Home Minister Amit Shah address the House on the matter and provide clarification regarding the developments.
The Opposition has maintained that issues related to education and examinations directly affect millions of young people and require a detailed parliamentary debate.
INDIA Bloc Discusses Strategy Ahead of Parliament Proceedings
Before meeting the Speaker, floor leaders of the INDIA bloc held a coordination meeting to discuss their strategy for the ongoing Monsoon Session.
The meeting was attended by senior opposition leaders, including Congress president and Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and other leaders from alliance parties.
The discussions focused on issues the Opposition plans to raise during the session, including examination-related concerns, alleged irregularities, and other matters of public importance.
Opposition parties have indicated that they will continue pressing for discussions on issues they believe require government accountability.
Parliament Proceedings Disrupted Over Examination Concerns
The opening day of the Monsoon Session witnessed disruptions as opposition MPs raised slogans and demanded discussions on the alleged NEET paper leak issue.
Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha faced repeated adjournments as opposition members sought immediate attention to the concerns of students.
In the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue of examination irregularities, stating that it affected the future of a large number of students across the country.
