Rahul Gandhi Says DMK Stands with Opposition on ‘Idea of India’ Despite Differences

Congress leader signals trust in DMK while intensifying attack on BJP over elections, institutions and foreign policy silence

NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has said he fully trusts the DMK to stand with the Opposition in defending the “idea of India”, making a notable political remark about an ally that Congress had distanced itself from in Tamil Nadu after the recent state elections.

Addressing INDIA bloc leaders during a meeting on Monday, Gandhi accused the BJP of running a coordinated narrative to portray divisions within the Opposition. A portion of his speech was later released by the Congress on Friday.

Gandhi also warned that the post Iran geopolitical situation could become “uncontrollable”, adding that it may open up political space for mass mobilisation by the Opposition.

Election integrity and institutional control allegations

The Congress leader asserted that the BJP cannot win the next general elections fairly, claiming that the real challenge lies in ensuring free and transparent polling. He alleged that electoral processes are no longer level-playing due to institutional influence.

He further accused the ruling party of manipulating democratic systems, claiming control over key institutions including the bureaucracy, legal framework, intelligence agencies and the Election Commission.

Referring to past state elections, Gandhi said several regional parties, including SP, TMC and RJD, were under the illusion that the electoral system remained fair, warning them against underestimating ground realities.

Congress as a “resistance movement”

Gandhi described the Congress as a historical “resistance movement” that existed before modern India and claimed it was not dependent on state protection like other political organisations. He said resistance would remain effective wherever democratic space is restricted.

Sharp criticism over foreign policy response

Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gandhi criticised his silence on recent US strikes on ships that reportedly killed three Indian nationals, alleging a lack of response due to political constraints.

He said the Prime Minister avoids speaking out against powerful global actors, adding that India’s leadership should have strongly addressed the deaths of its citizens.

Gandhi also remarked that while Modi may attend international summits such as the G7 and engage diplomatically with world leaders, he would remain silent on issues concerning the deceased Indians.
