New Delhi, June 25: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday strongly condemned the alleged exploitation of labourers at a factory in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district, describing the incident as a serious violation of human dignity and workers’ rights. He demanded swift justice for the victims, comprehensive rehabilitation measures and stringent punishment for those responsible.
The remarks came after authorities rescued 12 bonded labourers, including minors, from a paper plate manufacturing unit in Mandi village during a police-led operation earlier this week. Officials said the workers were allegedly subjected to severe mistreatment and were living in deplorable conditions.
Reacting to the development, Gandhi said the incident highlighted the hardships faced by economically vulnerable sections of society. In a post on social media platform X, he expressed concern over reports that the workers had been subjected to physical abuse and denied the wages promised to them.
He asserted that such incidents cannot be viewed merely as isolated criminal acts but must also be examined in the broader context of economic distress and weakening social protections. According to Gandhi, people facing financial insecurity often become vulnerable to exploitation when employment opportunities are limited and safety nets fail to provide adequate support.
The Congress leader argued that stagnating incomes and reduced opportunities leave many workers with few choices, increasing the risk of falling into exploitative labour arrangements. He stressed the need for stronger safeguards to protect workers, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Gandhi called on the authorities to ensure that all rescued labourers receive proper assistance, including rehabilitation and support to rebuild their lives. He also urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and bring all those involved to justice.
Officials said the rescue operation was launched following information about suspected bonded labour practices at the factory. During the raid, authorities found workers allegedly being held under harsh conditions and deprived of basic rights.
Preliminary findings indicated that several labourers had not received the wages they were promised and were allegedly forced to continue working under coercive circumstances. The rescued individuals have since been moved to safety, and further inquiries are underway.
The incident has sparked concern among labour rights advocates, who have called for stricter monitoring of workplaces and stronger enforcement of laws aimed at preventing bonded labour and worker exploitation.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the case, while efforts are being made to identify the full extent of the alleged violations and provide necessary support to the rescued workers.
