REDUCING ROAD ACCIDENTS: A PUBLIC HEALTH PRIORITY

Road accidents in India have long been a cause for concern, with the country consistently ranking among the top nations in terms of the number of such incidents. According to the latest annual report from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, there were 412,432 road accidents in India in 2021, resulting in 153,972 fatalities and 384,448 injuries. Sikkim tops the list as the state that has recorded the highest road fatality rate in the country in 2021 despite not having a larger share of the road network and registered motor vehicles. As per the report, there were 4,12,432 unfortunate incidences of road accidents during 2021 which claimed 1, 53,972 lives and caused injuries to 3, 84,448 persons.

These numbers are, unfortunately, not surprising, given the state of India’s roads and the often reckless behaviour of drivers. One of the main contributing factors to the high number of road accidents in India is the country’s inadequate infrastructure. Many roads are poorly maintained, with potholes, cracks, and other hazards posing a constant threat to drivers. In addition, there are often insufficient signs and markings to guide drivers, and a lack of proper traffic control measures, such as traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, can lead to confusion and collisions. But it’s not just the roads that are to blame for the high number of accidents. The behaviour of drivers also plays a significant role. Many drivers in India are reckless, ignoring traffic laws and taking unnecessary risks on the road. This can be attributed, in part, to a lack of driver education and training, as well as a lack of enforcement of traffic laws.

To address these issues, the government has implemented a number of measures aimed at improving road safety. These include revising crash safety norms for vehicles, establishing driving training and research centres, and implementing the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, which aims to improve road safety norms, reduce corruption, and facilitate citizen engagement. In addition, the ministry has developed an Integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD) system to report, manage, and analyse data on road accidents in order to enhance road safety in the country. While these measures are certainly a step in the right direction, much more needs to be done to address the problem of road accidents in India. For example, there needs to be a greater focus on driver education and training, as well as stronger enforcement of traffic laws. In addition, the government must invest in improving the infrastructure of the country’s roads, including by repairing and maintaining existing roads and constructing new ones where necessary. Ultimately, reducing the number of road accidents in India will require the cooperation and participation of all stakeholders, including the government, law enforcement agencies, and the public. By working together, we can create a safer and more efficient road network that benefits everyone.

In addition to the national statistics on road accidents in India, it is also worth examining the situation in specific regions of the country. For example, the state of Jammu and Kashmir has a particularly high rate of road accidents, with poor infrastructure and a lack of enforcement of traffic laws contributing to the problem. According to a report by the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police, there were 3,095 road accidents in the UT in 2021, resulting in 1,104 fatalities and 3,096 injuries. These numbers are alarming, and it is clear that more needs to be done to address the issue of road safety in Jammu and Kashmir. This could include implementing stricter traffic laws, investing in road infrastructure improvements, and providing driver education and training programs.
