India expands diplomatic and development cooperation with Trinidad and Tobago as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar concludes final phase of Caribbean outreach.

PORT OF SPAIN, May 9: India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar wrapped up the final leg of his Caribbean tour with a series of high-level diplomatic engagements in Trinidad and Tobago, where his interaction with cricket legend Brian Lara drew widespread attention.
During the visit, Jaishankar shared photographs alongside the iconic former West Indies captain and described the meeting as a special moment. Lara, celebrated globally for his elegant batting and record breaking career, remains one of cricket’s most respected figures. His achievements in international cricket continue to place him among the sport’s all time greats.
Apart from the sporting connection, the visit focused heavily on enhancing bilateral relations between India and Trinidad and Tobago. Jaishankar held detailed discussions with Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar on expanding cooperation in multiple sectors including clean energy, tourism, healthcare and development partnerships.
The two leaders also participated in an event where Made in India laptops were distributed to school students, highlighting India’s growing role in educational and digital support initiatives in the Caribbean region. Officials said the programme reflects New Delhi’s emphasis on technology-driven cooperation with partner nations.
Several agreements were finalised during the visit, covering areas such as renewable energy collaboration, cultural exchanges, traditional medicine and capacity-building projects. Diplomatic sources described the outcomes as an important step toward deepening India’s engagement with Caribbean countries.
Jaishankar expressed appreciation for the support and hospitality extended by the Trinidad and Tobago leadership and praised the longstanding friendship shared by the two nations. He also acknowledged the importance of the Indian diaspora in strengthening cultural and economic connections across the region.
The minister was additionally honoured during a ceremonial flag-raising event organised by the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs. Brian Lara joined the occasion, adding symbolic significance to the programme that celebrated ties between India and the Caribbean nation.
Earlier in the tour, Jaishankar visited Jamaica and Suriname as part of India’s broader diplomatic outreach in the Caribbean. The multi-nation visit focused on boosting political engagement, economic cooperation and people-to-people relations.
Analysts believe the Caribbean outreach reflects India’s growing strategic interest in strengthening partnerships with small island nations through development assistance, education initiatives and trade cooperation. The visit is also being viewed as part of New Delhi’s effort to reinforce ties with countries that share historical and cultural links with India.
With several new agreements now in place, officials from both sides are expected to work toward faster implementation of joint projects aimed at expanding cooperation in the coming years.
