Season’s first snowfall likely in Kashmir from October 5, says MeT, warns of temperature drop and weather disruptions

Srinagar, Sept 30: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast the season’s first snowfall over the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir between October 5 and 6, accompanied by a marked drop in day temperatures and intermittent spells of rain and thundershowers. The weather department has also issued advisories for farmers, travellers, and tourists to prepare for possible disruptions during this period.

According to the latest forecast, weather conditions across Jammu and Kashmir are expected to remain generally dry until October 4, with only a slight chance of light rain, thunder, or gusty winds in the late evening or night of October 4. However, a significant change is expected from October 5 to 7, when the region will witness generally cloudy skies, light to moderate rainfall, and snowfall in the higher reaches of north, central, and south Kashmir, as well as the Chenab Valley. Mountain passes such as Margan Top and Sinthan Top are also expected to receive fresh snow, marking the beginning of the winter season in the Union Territory.

The weather office has warned of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones at vulnerable locations, especially in hilly and mountainous areas, due to the expected precipitation. It has also predicted a significant fall in day temperatures on October 5 and 6, advising residents and travellers to plan accordingly.

In view of the forecast, farmers have been urged to complete paddy harvesting and secure horticultural produce by the afternoon of October 4 to prevent potential losses from rain and snow. Similarly, travellers, transporters, trekkers, and tourists have been advised to plan their journeys keeping in mind the likelihood of weather-related disruptions.

The weather is expected to stabilize again between October 8 and 10, with generally dry conditions forecast across the Union Territory, the MeT added.
