Mumbai, July 20: Indian equity markets closed lower on Monday, with benchmark indices coming under pressure from weakness in private banking stocks and renewed concerns surrounding geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
The Sensex declined 442.93 points, or 0.57 per cent, to finish at 77,708.52, while the Nifty 50 fell 95.80 points, or 0.39 per cent, to close at 24,238.50.
Banking stocks emerged as a major drag on the benchmarks, while broader market indices performed comparatively better. The Nifty Midcap index gained around 0.6 per cent, indicating continued interest in selected companies outside the large-cap segment.
Market sentiment was also affected by uncertainty linked to developments in West Asia. Investors remained cautious as geopolitical risks can influence crude oil prices, inflation expectations and capital flows into emerging markets.
The Indian currency also weakened during the session. The rupee ended at 96.45 against the US dollar, compared with 96.28 in the previous session.
The movement in equities came amid heightened attention to corporate earnings and upcoming initial public offerings. Investors are assessing company-specific performance while also monitoring global developments that could influence domestic markets.
Analysts said stock-specific opportunities could continue to dominate trading as investors navigate a narrow range in the benchmark indices. The performance of banking, technology, automobile and real estate stocks is likely to remain closely watched.
With geopolitical uncertainty still influencing investor behaviour, market participants are expected to remain selective while tracking corporate results, crude oil movements, currency trends and global monetary policy signals.
