Slippery Roads Halt Two-Way Traffic on Tharad Section of J&K Highway

Slippery Conditions in Udhampur Delay Full Restoration of Highway

JAMMU, Sep 11: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is allowing only one-way traffic on Thursday after slippery road conditions were reported in the Tharad section of Udhampur district, officials said. The highway, the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir to the rest of India, was reopened on Wednesday after a nine-day closure caused by heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides.

Authorities clarified that, “Subject to fair weather and good road conditions, only light motor vehicles (LMVs) will be permitted from Jammu towards Srinagar via Nagrota. The Tharad section has not yet been fully restored.”

The advisory added that LMVs were allowed on a trial basis, but vehicles got stuck due to the wet and slippery surface, requiring assistance from JCBs and loaders throughout the day. Heavy motor vehicles remain prohibited until the roadbed dries.

Alternative routes, including Mughal Road, Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari Road, and Sinthan Road, continue to remain open for traffic.
