GULMARG, May 28: Jammu and Kashmir’s former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah affirmed on Wednesday that the ongoing discussions regarding the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir remain active and unaffected, despite the recent terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22. Speaking to media persons in the scenic town of Gulmarg, approximately 52 kilometers from Srinagar, Abdullah clarified that the attack has in no way derailed or delayed the efforts or dialogue concerning statehood.
“Absolutely not. The talks have not been stalled due to the Pahalgam incident. In fact, if one were to examine the official speech presented at the recent NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting, you will find a clear and categorical reference to the demand for restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir,” Abdullah stated. He added that the speech, which was circulated among all members of the Council and handed over to the Honourable Prime Minister, emphasized the urgent need for reinstating the region’s statehood status.
When asked whether the atmosphere of security concerns following the Pahalgam attack had any bearing on the political dialogue regarding Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional status, Abdullah clarified that while certain platforms—such as the special session of the J&K Assembly—may not have been used to bring up the issue, that in no way implies that the conversation has come to a halt.
“I only refrained from using the special Assembly session to raise the matter of statehood. But let me make it clear—this does not mean the conversation has stopped. Discussions are very much alive and ongoing,” he asserted.
Abdullah’s remarks come at a time when political parties and stakeholders across the region continue to press the central government for the restoration of statehood, which was revoked in August 2019 when Jammu and Kashmir was reorganized into a Union Territory. His statement seeks to reassure the people of the region that despite security challenges, the political roadmap for regaining full statehood remains firmly on the table.
