THRISSUR, June 14: Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi on Sunday indicated that any future decision regarding fuel rates would be linked to developments in the international energy market, particularly the availability of crude oil.
Speaking to reporters in Thrissur, the minister said the government would evaluate the situation after assessing global supply conditions. His remarks come at a time when consumers are closely watching fuel prices following recent increases in petrol, diesel and cooking gas rates.
Gopi stressed that the matter falls under the purview of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry and noted that Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri would take the necessary call after examining market conditions.
“The situation will be reviewed based on the availability of crude oil supplies. The concerned minister will assess the developments and take an appropriate decision,” Gopi said while responding to questions on a possible revision in fuel prices.
The minister also reacted to repeated queries from journalists on the issue, remarking that policy decisions are handled by the concerned authorities and not dictated by public speculation.
Fuel costs have come under pressure in recent weeks due to uncertainties in the global energy market. Analysts have linked the trend to disruptions in crude oil and natural gas flows caused by escalating tensions in West Asia, a region that plays a crucial role in the world’s energy supply chain.
The geopolitical instability has raised concerns about supply security, leading to fluctuations in international oil prices and increasing pressure on importing nations. India, which depends heavily on imported crude oil to meet its energy requirements, remains sensitive to such developments.
Industry observers note that any prolonged disruption in global energy supplies could influence domestic pricing patterns. However, the government has maintained that it continues to monitor international market movements and will take decisions keeping consumer interests and economic stability in mind.
As global energy markets remain volatile, stakeholders across sectors are awaiting further clarity on supply conditions and their potential impact on domestic fuel prices in the coming weeks.
