Mumbai, Sep 19 : Tata Electronics and Japan’s Fujifilm have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen India’s semiconductor materials ecosystem, with a particular focus on supporting Tata Electronics’ upcoming fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat.
Under the agreement announced on September 18, Fujifilm plans to use its expertise in advanced semiconductor materials to develop and supply products suited to the requirements of the upcoming facility. The collaboration is also aimed at encouraging the development of local suppliers for critical raw materials used in chip manufacturing.
Fujifilm is expected to invest around ₹800 crore, or approximately $83 million, to establish a semiconductor materials plant in the Dholera Special Investment Region. The facility is planned to be developed in phases to support the availability and movement of materials required by the fabrication unit.
Tata Electronics is developing its Dholera semiconductor fab with an investment of about ₹91,000 crore. The planned 300mm facility is designed to manufacture chips using technology nodes ranging from 28nm to 110nm. These chips are expected to serve sectors including automotive, consumer electronics, computing, data storage, wireless communications and artificial intelligence.
The partnership also includes efforts to help Indian chemical manufacturers develop the capability to produce high-purity materials required for semiconductor fabrication. Fujifilm and Tata Electronics intend to support technology transfer, quality assurance and manufacturing know-how as the domestic supply chain develops.
The move comes as India works to establish a broader semiconductor manufacturing network rather than relying heavily on imported materials and equipment. Developing suppliers close to fabrication facilities can help reduce logistical dependencies while creating additional opportunities for Indian manufacturers.
The Dholera project is expected to become a major component of India’s semiconductor manufacturing plans. The collaboration with Fujifilm adds an international technology partner to the materials side of the project and expands the ecosystem being developed around the planned fabrication facility.
