WASHINGTON, Aug 22: US President Donald Trump said Washington’s decision to pursue an economic campaign against Iran does not restrict its ability to consider military action, signalling that the administration is keeping all options open in dealing with Tehran.
Asked by reporters whether the shift towards economic pressure meant the United States had limited its military choices in the region, Trump replied, “No, not at all.”
Trump’s remarks came after he announced on Wednesday that Iran had failed to take what he described as an opportunity to reach an agreement with Washington. He said the United States would consequently begin a large scale economic operation targeting the Islamic Republic.
The latest comments suggest that the economic measures are not intended to replace Washington’s broader security strategy. Instead, the administration appears to be combining financial pressure with continued military flexibility as it seeks to influence Tehran.
Trump did not provide details about possible military measures or indicate whether any specific operation was under consideration. His statement, however, keeps the possibility of further US action in the region open amid continued tensions between Washington and Tehran.
The shift towards economic warfare is expected to place additional pressure on Iran’s economy while the United States seeks to compel Tehran to reconsider its position in negotiations.
Washington’s approach could also have wider implications for regional security, particularly given the presence of US forces and Iran-aligned groups across the Middle East.
For now, Trump’s administration has made clear that its economic campaign against Tehran should not be interpreted as a withdrawal of military options.
