New Delhi, July 15: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has urged higher education institutions across India to deepen collaboration with industries in an effort to improve graduate employability and bridge the gap between classroom education and workplace expectations.
The Commission has advised universities and colleges to strengthen partnerships with businesses, research organisations, and technology companies by introducing structured internship programmes, collaborative research initiatives, and practical training opportunities.
According to education officials, rapid technological advancements are transforming employment requirements across sectors, making industry exposure an essential component of higher education.
The UGC has encouraged institutions to regularly review academic curricula in consultation with employers so that graduates acquire practical competencies alongside theoretical knowledge.
Universities have also been advised to establish dedicated industry interaction cells responsible for identifying internship opportunities, facilitating campus recruitment, and coordinating skill development programmes for students.
Experts believe stronger institutional partnerships can significantly improve students’ readiness for careers in engineering, healthcare, information technology, manufacturing, finance, and emerging digital sectors.
The Commission has additionally recommended increasing participation from industry professionals in curriculum development, guest lectures, mentoring programmes, and innovation projects. Such initiatives are expected to expose students to real-world challenges before graduation.
Educational institutions have been encouraged to promote entrepreneurship by expanding incubation centres, startup mentoring programmes, and innovation competitions. These efforts aim to nurture job creators alongside job seekers.
Several universities have already begun implementing multidisciplinary projects involving faculty members, students, and corporate partners to encourage collaborative research and problem-solving.
Education analysts say closer engagement between academia and industry will play an important role in achieving the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by creating graduates equipped with practical skills, innovation capabilities, and lifelong learning competencies.
The UGC believes that sustained cooperation between educational institutions and industry stakeholders will enhance the quality of higher education while improving employment outcomes for students across the country.
