NEW DELHI, Sept 10: Wipro’s adoption of artificial intelligence has freed up work capacity equivalent to around 20,000 employees, with the affected workforce being redeployed to other roles, the company’s Chief Technology Officer Sandhya Arun said.
The Indian IT services major, which had around 243,000 employees as of June, is increasingly integrating AI into its operations as the technology reshapes software development and client services.
Arun said the company has trained more than 100,000 employees in advanced AI skills as part of its transition towards what Wipro describes as a human-AI operating model.
The company is also expanding its pool of engineers working directly with clients to help businesses adopt artificial intelligence and integrate it into their operations.
The development comes as India’s software services industry undergoes a major shift, with companies investing heavily in AI training, partnerships and automation while reassessing traditional hiring and delivery models.
Wipro has yet to disclose specific revenue generated from its AI-related businesses. The company remains focused on expanding its AI capabilities and converting productivity gains into measurable commercial outcomes.
Arun stressed that productivity improvements alone should not be the sole measure of success, saying AI adoption should ultimately improve customer experience, generate new revenue opportunities and deliver better business outcomes.
The shift reflects a broader transformation across India’s technology sector, where major IT companies are increasingly deploying AI tools to automate tasks, improve efficiency and help clients implement new digital services.
