NEW DELHI, May 16: Deep divisions over the escalating conflict involving Iran prevented BRICS foreign ministers from issuing a joint declaration at the conclusion of their meeting in New Delhi, highlighting growing geopolitical strains within the bloc.
India, which currently chairs BRICS, released a separate chair statement after member nations failed to reach consensus on language related to the Middle East crisis. The disagreement reportedly centred on Iran’s accusations against the United Arab Emirates over alleged military cooperation with the United States and Israel.
Iran defended its recent missile and drone attacks, claiming they targeted only foreign military assets stationed in the Gulf region. The UAE strongly condemned the strikes and reserved the right to respond against what it described as attacks on its sovereignty.
The dispute overshadowed broader discussions on economic cooperation, trade, energy security and reforms in global financial institutions. Diplomats attending the summit described negotiations as tense, with several countries taking cautious positions to avoid deeper divisions.
India urged all parties to pursue dialogue and stressed the importance of maintaining regional stability, particularly given the impact of the crisis on global oil supplies and shipping routes.
The ongoing tensions in West Asia have already disrupted trade through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors for energy transport. Several Asian economies dependent on oil imports, including India and China, are closely monitoring the situation.
The BRICS bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and newer members — has increasingly sought to project itself as an alternative voice to Western-led global institutions. However, analysts say the inability to issue a joint statement reflects internal contradictions and competing strategic interests.
The summit also discussed expanding trade in local currencies and reducing dependence on the US dollar, though no major announcements were made.
Observers noted that the divisions within BRICS could weaken efforts to build a unified geopolitical platform at a time of rising global uncertainty.
