NEW DELHI, June 26: The Central Government has intensified nationwide monsoon preparedness measures following forecasts of widespread heavy rainfall across several parts of the country. Disaster management authorities, state governments and emergency response agencies have been directed to remain on high alert to minimise the impact of floods, landslides and other rain-related incidents during the active monsoon period.
Officials said comprehensive preparedness plans have been activated across vulnerable regions, with particular emphasis on flood prone districts, hilly areas and urban centres susceptible to waterlogging. The objective is to ensure timely rescue operations, uninterrupted essential services and effective coordination among various government departments.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Forces (SDRFs) and local emergency teams have positioned rescue personnel, boats and specialised equipment at strategic locations to enable quick response during emergencies. Control rooms are functioning round the clock to monitor weather developments and coordinate relief efforts whenever required.
Authorities have advised district administrations to closely monitor rivers, reservoirs and dams while maintaining regular communication with weather agencies. Irrigation departments have been instructed to manage reservoir levels carefully in accordance with rainfall forecasts to reduce flood risks downstream.
Urban local bodies have intensified drainage cleaning operations to prevent waterlogging in major cities. Civic agencies are also inspecting pumping stations, stormwater drains and emergency power systems to ensure uninterrupted functioning during heavy rainfall.
In mountainous regions, authorities have increased surveillance of landslide-prone stretches, particularly along national highways and important road corridors. Public Works Departments have deployed machinery and emergency teams to restore connectivity quickly in case of road blockages caused by landslides or flash floods.
The Ministry of Health has directed hospitals and healthcare institutions to maintain adequate stocks of essential medicines, emergency equipment and blood supplies. Medical teams have been kept on standby to address possible outbreaks of waterborne and vector-borne diseases that often accompany prolonged monsoon conditions.
Farmers have been advised to remain updated on weather forecasts and follow agricultural advisories issued by state agriculture departments. Experts have encouraged farmers to adopt protective measures for standing crops, livestock and stored produce in anticipation of heavy rainfall.
Educational institutions in vulnerable districts have also been instructed to closely monitor local weather conditions. Authorities indicated that temporary closures may be considered whenever severe weather poses risks to students and staff.
The government has appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall, follow official weather advisories and immediately report emergencies to local authorities. People living near rivers, low-lying areas and landslide-prone locations have been advised to remain vigilant throughout the monsoon season.
Officials emphasised that improved forecasting systems, better inter agency coordination and strengthened disaster management infrastructure have significantly enhanced India’s preparedness for extreme weather events. Continuous monitoring and timely public advisories will remain key components of the government’s strategy to safeguard lives and minimise damage during the ongoing monsoon season.
