GALLE: Devdutt Padikkal made a memorable return to Test cricket on Saturday, scoring his maiden century as India took control of the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.
The left handed batter remained unbeaten on 131 at the close of play, helping India reach 288 for two after choosing to bat first. His composed innings came in India’s historic 600th Test match.
Padikkal was brought into the playing XI after Sai Sudharsan was ruled out through injury. Having last appeared in a Test in November 2024, the Karnataka batter made the most of his opportunity at No. 3.
His century was built on disciplined strokeplay and strong footwork against Sri Lanka’s spin attack. The knock also strengthened his case for a regular place in India’s middle order.
KL Rahul provided valuable support during the first day’s play, compiling 77 before retiring hurt after suffering severe cramps. His partnership with Padikkal helped India recover from the early dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal and establish a commanding position.
India’s innings also marked a significant milestone for the country’s Test history. The Galle encounter is India’s 600th Test, placing the team among an exclusive group of nations with such a landmark appearance.
With Padikkal unbeaten and Rishabh Pant at the crease, India will look to build an imposing first-innings total when play resumes. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will need early wickets to prevent the visitors from gaining an even stronger grip on the contest.
