EC still sitting in the lap of BJP: Tony

Decries Election Commission's bias in delaying J&K Assembly Polls

SUCHETGARH, March 16, 2024: Anguishing over the Election Commission’s decision to delay Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir deliberately while announcing the Lok Sabha schedule today, Taranjit Singh Tony, General Secretary JKPCC and DDC Suchetgarh, minced no words in accusing the Commission of being under the influence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Speaking to media persons after starting development works in Suchetgarh constituency here today, the senior Congress leader said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are once again feeling cheated at the hands of both the Election Commission and the BJP. It is highly disappointing to witness the step-motherly treatment given by the BJP to the people of Jammu and Kashmir by not allowing the Election Commission to announce Assembly elections. He asserted that the ruling Govt at the Centre has snatched away the rightful autonomy and statehood from the people, leaving them angry and betrayed.

Tony reiterated the importance of conducting assembly elections in the region, questioning why elections for Lok Sabha were being held while the assembly elections were being deliberately delayed.

He said “The BJP has miserably failed to protect the rights and interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. By restricting the Election Commission from announcing the assembly polls for Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP has once again demonstrated their complete disregard for democracy and fair representation,” he stated.

He further emphasized that this delay in conducting assembly elections clearly exposes the fear of the BJP in potentially losing the support of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a clear betrayal of the trust placed in the democratic process, he added.

Tony reiterated the Congress Party’s unwavering commitment to upholding democratic values and vowed to continue the fight against the BJP’s undemocratic machinations. “The people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve better than this betrayal. We stand in solidarity with them in their struggle for justice and democracy,” he affirmed.

Earlier, Taranjit Singh Tony inaugurated a series of long-awaited road projects worth Rs 3 crores in Suchetgarh. These infrastructural developments included roads connecting Bidipur Jattan to village Layain. Later, he also started two road projects at village Pindi and Village Bhojpur to Kotli Mirdiyan in presence of prominent people of the areas respectively.

Speaking on the occasion, Tony said it has been the long-standing demand of the people of Bidipur Jattan to have a road connecting their village to Layain, and after 75 years of waiting, this demand has finally been met. Similarly, the road project connecting village Pindi and Village Bhojpur to Kotli Mirdiyan will improve the mobility and connectivity of the region.

The senior Congress leader emphasized that the infrastructural development of border villages is a vital aspect of ensuring the overall progress and welfare of the people. The completion of these road projects will not only improve connectivity but will also boost economic and social opportunities in the region, he added.
