EAM S. Jaishankar and Oman's Foreign Minister review bilateral ties, discuss regional stability, maritime collaboration and emerging technologies during high-level talks in Muscat.

NEW DELHI, July 10: India and Oman have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding their long-standing strategic partnership, with renewed emphasis on trade, defence, investment, maritime cooperation and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. The understanding emerged during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s official visit to Muscat, where he held comprehensive discussions with Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi.

The high-level meeting reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations while exploring new opportunities to strengthen cooperation across sectors that are becoming increasingly important for both countries. The discussions also included an exchange of views on recent developments in the Gulf region and broader international issues affecting regional peace and stability.

The meeting reflected the growing momentum in India-Oman relations, with both sides expressing satisfaction over the progress made in recent years and agreeing to deepen collaboration in areas that contribute to economic growth, security and technological advancement.

Trade and investment emerged as major areas of focus during the talks. Both ministers discussed ways to facilitate greater commercial engagement, encourage private sector participation and improve business connectivity between the two countries. They also explored opportunities to strengthen supply chains and promote mutually beneficial investments that can further enhance economic cooperation.

Connectivity initiatives formed another important part of the dialogue. Recognising Oman’s strategic location in the Gulf region and India’s expanding global trade ambitions, the two leaders reviewed measures to improve transportation links, logistics infrastructure and maritime connectivity. Enhanced shipping cooperation is expected to strengthen commercial exchanges while supporting regional economic integration.

Maritime security and defence cooperation also featured prominently in the discussions. India and Oman have maintained close defence ties for several decades, supported by regular naval interactions, military exchanges and joint exercises. The ministers reviewed ongoing cooperation and explored ways to further strengthen collaboration in ensuring maritime safety, securing sea lanes and addressing common security challenges in the Indian Ocean region.

Technology partnerships received significant attention, particularly in the fields of digital innovation, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. Both countries acknowledged the growing importance of emerging technologies in driving economic transformation and national security. They agreed to explore greater collaboration in research, digital infrastructure, innovation and capacity building to prepare for future technological challenges.

Following the meeting, Jaishankar shared details of the discussions through a social media post, describing the interaction as productive and comprehensive. He noted that the dialogue covered trade, investments, connectivity, maritime affairs, defence, technology, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence while also reviewing broader regional developments.

The External Affairs Minister highlighted that both sides exchanged detailed perspectives on the evolving security situation in the Gulf and discussed collective efforts aimed at preserving peace and stability in the region. He observed that the discussions reflected the trust and maturity that have come to define the India-Oman Strategic Partnership.

During the visit, Jaishankar also conveyed India’s gratitude to the Government of Oman for extending timely assistance to Indian seafarers affected during recent regional developments. The gesture underscored the close humanitarian cooperation between the two countries and highlighted Oman’s continued support for the welfare of Indian nationals.

Apart from official engagements, the External Affairs Minister met members of the Indian diaspora living in Oman. He appreciated their valuable contribution to Oman’s economic development and acknowledged their role in strengthening people-to-people relations between the two nations. The Indian community remains one of the largest expatriate groups in Oman and continues to serve as an important bridge connecting the two countries.

Jaishankar’s visit to Oman marked the final leg of his multi-nation Gulf tour, which also included Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait. The diplomatic outreach aimed to reinforce India’s engagement with key Gulf partners while assessing the evolving geopolitical environment in West Asia.

The regional tour came at a significant time following the ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Oman and Qatar played important diplomatic roles in facilitating dialogue that contributed to easing tensions, making consultations with Gulf leadership particularly important for India’s regional engagement.

India considers the Gulf region a vital strategic partner because of its energy security, trade interests and the presence of a large Indian diaspora. Strengthening relations with Gulf countries has become a key element of New Delhi’s foreign policy, with growing cooperation extending beyond energy to include investment, infrastructure, technology, defence and digital innovation.

For Oman, India remains one of its most trusted partners in Asia, with expanding economic ties and longstanding historical connections dating back centuries. Bilateral trade has continued to grow steadily, supported by regular political dialogue and increasing cooperation across multiple sectors.

Officials believe the latest discussions in Muscat will further strengthen institutional collaboration and create new opportunities for joint initiatives in advanced technology, maritime security, digital transformation and sustainable economic development.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to maintaining regular high-level dialogue and implementing initiatives that will deepen the strategic partnership while contributing to regional stability and shared prosperity.
