Ishaan remains unbeaten, Avni bags girls’ crown in Jammu chess event

Jammu, May 10: Young chess players displayed sharp strategy, focus and competitive spirit as Ishaan Chowdhary and Avni Sharma emerged winners in the VCA 2nd Open Jammu Under-17 Boys and Girls Chess Tournament, held under the aegis of the All J&K Chess Association and conducted as per FIDE Laws of Chess.

Ishaan Chowdhary delivered an impressive unbeaten performance in the boys’ section, securing six points out of seven rounds to claim the Under-17 title. His consistent play throughout the tournament reflected strong concentration, tactical awareness and maturity beyond his age.

In the girls’ section, Avni Sharma captured the Under-17 title with five points, proving her strength and determination against a competitive field. Her performance stood out as a fine example of the growing participation and rising standard of girls in chess across Jammu.

In the Under-11 category, Triyansh Verma and Manushree Nischal secured the boys’ and girls’ titles respectively. Both young players finished with four points each, demonstrating promising talent and bright prospects for the future of chess in the region.

The prize distribution ceremony was graced by senior sports journalist and chess enthusiast Sanjeev Sharma, who presented the title trophies and cash prizes to the winners. Former J&K chess champion and prominent chess coach Vivek Bharti was also present on the occasion. Together, they awarded trophies and cash prizes worth Rs 3,000 to the young achievers and encouraged them to continue their journey in the mind sport with greater dedication.

The tournament witnessed spirited contests across seven rounds, with players competing strongly in different age categories. Ishaan’s unbeaten run, Avni’s composed performance, and the victories of Triyansh and Manushree highlighted the depth of emerging chess talent in Jammu.

Organisers appreciated the enthusiasm of the participants and said such tournaments play a vital role in providing young players with competitive exposure. They added that regular chess events are essential for building confidence, improving decision-making skills and preparing budding players for higher-level competitions at the Union Territory, national and international levels.
