Karnataka to Introduce AI and Coding Education from Class 6

The state government has announced programmes aimed at giving school students early exposure to artificial intelligence, coding and emerging technologies.

BENGALURU, Aug 17: The Karnataka government has announced new initiatives to introduce artificial intelligence and coding education in schools, with the programmes set to begin for students from Class 6.

Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced the AI Akshara Abhiyana and Coding Gurukula programmes, marking an effort to bring emerging technology skills into school education at an early stage.

The initiatives are aimed at helping students understand the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and computer programming while developing skills that could become increasingly important in higher education and future employment.

Under the proposed programme, students will receive exposure to technology-oriented learning rather than relying solely on conventional classroom subjects. The government sees early digital education as an important step towards preparing young learners for a rapidly changing employment landscape.

The announcement also reflects the growing emphasis on technology based education across India, particularly as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into professional and academic fields.

Introducing coding at the school level could help students develop problem solving, logical reasoning and computational thinking skills. Meanwhile, AI-focused learning could familiarise them with the basic concepts and applications of a technology that is increasingly influencing different sectors.

The Karnataka government’s move comes amid wider discussions on how schools should prepare students for an economy shaped by automation, artificial intelligence and digital technologies.

Further details regarding the curriculum, implementation schedule, participating schools and teacher training are expected to be announced as the programmes are rolled out.

The initiatives are expected to give students an opportunity to develop technology skills alongside their regular academic studies and could strengthen Karnataka’s focus on future ready education.
