Iran, Mar 10 : The JD Vance and Pete Hegseth joined the grieving family of a Kentucky soldier on Monday as his remains were returned to the United States following his death in the ongoing Iran conflict.
A solemn dignified transfer ceremony was held at Dover Air Force Base, where the flag-draped transfer case carrying the remains of Benjamin N. Pennington was received by military officials and family members. Pennington, 26, became the seventh American service member to die since hostilities escalated.
According to the Pentagon, the soldier succumbed to injuries on Sunday after being wounded in a March 1 attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia.
Pennington served with the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, specifically assigned to the 1st Space Battalion under the 1st Space Brigade at Fort Carson. The unit supports operations such as missile warning systems, GPS monitoring, and satellite communications.
Community members in Pennington’s hometown of Glendale, Kentucky remembered him as a humble and dedicated young man. Local pastor Mike Bell, who had known him since childhood, described him as a quiet individual who carried out his responsibilities with commitment.
Officials in Hardin County also expressed grief over the loss. County Judge-Executive Keith Taul said the tragedy deeply affected the community that had known the Pennington family for decades.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear paid tribute to the soldier on social media, calling him a hero who gave his life in service to the nation.
The six other American personnel killed since the conflict began on February 28 died in a drone strike on a military operations facility in Kuwait.
Pennington, a 2017 graduate of Central Hardin High School, had joined the military shortly after completing his education and had recently been assigned to the Space and Missile Defense Command in 2025. The Army said he will be posthumously promoted to the rank of staff sergeant in recognition of his service.
Military commanders described him as a committed noncommissioned officer who led with professionalism and dedication.
