NEW DELHI, Aug 17: BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Monday announced his resignation from all party positions and primary membership, saying he had formally asked BJP national president Nitin Nabin to accept his decision.
Poonawalla shared his resignation letter on X, stating that he had initially offered to step down unconditionally on July 30, citing pressing financial and personal circumstances.
According to the letter, the party had been reluctant to accept his resignation and had asked him to reconsider the decision. Poonawalla said he appreciated the party’s response but had reached a final decision after prolonged consideration.
He said he wanted to be relieved of his responsibilities as national spokesperson and from active primary membership of the BJP.
Poonawalla also referred to developments involving certain individuals, saying recent events had reinforced his decision to leave the organisational structure.
In the latest communication to Nabin, he reiterated that his decision was driven by personal circumstances and his intention to move into the private sector.
“Wherever possible and in whatever format possible, I will continue to support the vision and work of Prime Minister Modi and the BJP,” he said in the letter.
Poonawalla also drew a distinction between leaving the party organisation and distancing himself from its broader political outlook, saying he was “only leaving the Vyavastha, not the Vyakti or Vichar.”
His announcement comes weeks after he changed his X profile bio on July 31, removing references to the BJP. The move had triggered speculation about his future in the party, although there was no immediate official confirmation at the time.
With his latest letter, Poonawalla has made his decision public and formally sought relief from his organisational responsibilities and primary membership.
The BJP leadership is now expected to take a decision on his resignation.
