MUMBAI, Aug 24: The Centre has appointed former finance ministry special secretary Annie George Mathew, Boston Consulting Group India chairman Janmejaya Kumar Sinha and former diplomat Syed Akbaruddin as part-time, non-official directors on the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India for a four year term.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the Department of Financial Services’ proposal on August 22, clearing the appointment of the three members to the central bank’s governing board.
Mathew brings more than three decades of experience in public finance and government administration. She has served as special secretary in the expenditure department and is a member of the Sixteenth Finance Commission.
Her professional background includes government auditing and accounts, public procurement, financial management and fiscal policy.
Sinha, who began his professional career with the RBI, has worked extensively on economic policy, structural reforms and India’s long-term development strategy. He currently serves as chairman of Boston Consulting Group India and advises the government on economic transformation.
He was also a private sector member of reform panels led by former Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba that worked on the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
Akbaruddin brings extensive experience in international diplomacy. A 1985-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, he served as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2016 to 2020.
Before his UN assignment, Akbaruddin was spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs between 2012 and 2015. He also represented India at the International Atomic Energy Agency from 2006 to 2011.
The appointments bring expertise in fiscal management, economic reforms and international affairs to the RBI’s central board as the institution continues to oversee monetary policy, financial stability and the broader functioning of the country’s banking system.
