Katra, June 13: Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta on Saturday advocated the creation of a religious corridor connecting Jammu and Kashmir with Himachal Pradesh, saying such an initiative would strengthen spiritual tourism and deepen cultural ties between the neighbouring regions.
During his visit to the revered Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Katra, the governor said both Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are bound by centuries old religious traditions and shared faith, making them ideal partners in promoting a broader pilgrimage circuit for devotees.
Accompanied by family members, Gupta paid obeisance at the shrine situated atop the Trikuta Hills and interacted with media representatives after completing the pilgrimage. He said the proposed corridor could provide devotees with an opportunity to visit prominent religious destinations across both regions through an integrated spiritual tourism network.
The governor observed that millions of pilgrims travel annually to sacred shrines in Jammu and Kashmir as well as Himachal Pradesh. By improving connectivity and promoting coordinated tourism initiatives, the two regions can offer a richer spiritual experience while generating economic opportunities for local communities dependent on tourism-related activities.
According to Gupta, the initiative could help establish a seamless pilgrimage route connecting important temples and religious destinations, encouraging visitors to extend their journeys beyond a single shrine and explore the wider cultural heritage of northern India.
He emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh share deep-rooted cultural similarities, with devotees in both regions worshipping many of the same deities and participating in common religious traditions. This spiritual bond, he said, provides a strong foundation for collaborative efforts in promoting faith based tourism.
The governor also expressed satisfaction over the prevailing atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir, stating that improved conditions have contributed to a steady increase in the number of pilgrims and tourists visiting the Union Territory. He expressed hope that peace and stability would continue to strengthen, benefiting residents as well as visitors.
Gupta offered prayers for prosperity, harmony and continued development, saying that spiritual destinations play an important role in preserving India’s rich cultural identity while fostering social unity.
Speaking about Himachal Pradesh’s tourism sector, the governor said the state continues to attract visitors from across the country due to its scenic beauty, religious significance and hospitality. He noted that efforts are underway to enhance infrastructure and improve facilities for travellers visiting various destinations in the hill state.
The state administration, he said, is focusing on upgrading roads, accommodation facilities and public amenities to ensure a comfortable and memorable experience for tourists and pilgrims alike. Improved infrastructure is expected to support the growing number of visitors arriving each year.
Highlighting India’s civilisational heritage, Gupta said the country possesses an unparalleled wealth of temples, pilgrimage centres and sacred sites that reflect thousands of years of spiritual traditions. He encouraged people to explore and appreciate these cultural treasures, stressing that India’s religious heritage remains one of its greatest strengths.
The governor said promoting domestic pilgrimage tourism can help preserve cultural values while supporting local economies through increased visitor spending, employment generation and infrastructure development.
Observers believe that a dedicated J&K-Himachal religious corridor could create new opportunities for tourism growth, benefiting transport operators, hospitality businesses, local artisans and service providers across both regions.
The proposal is also expected to encourage greater cultural exchanges and people to people interaction, reinforcing the historic links that have long connected communities in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
As pilgrimage tourism continues to emerge as a major contributor to regional economies, initiatives aimed at enhancing connectivity and promoting spiritual circuits are increasingly being viewed as important tools for sustainable tourism development.
