WHO and Peking University Strengthen Cooperation on Health Emergency Preparedness

The partnership aims to improve international capacity to prepare for and respond to future disease outbreaks and other health emergencies.

Geneva, Aug 22: The World Health Organization and Peking University have strengthened their cooperation to advance health emergency preparedness, with the partnership focusing on improving global capacity to respond to public health threats.

The collaboration, highlighted by WHO on August 21, is aimed at supporting stronger preparedness systems and developing expertise that can help countries respond more effectively when health emergencies arise.

Health emergencies can place intense pressure on medical systems, particularly when countries face emerging infectious diseases, natural disasters or other large-scale threats. Strengthening preparedness before crises occur is therefore considered an important part of protecting communities.

Focus on knowledge and expertise

The cooperation is expected to encourage greater exchange of knowledge and expertise between the international health organisation and the Chinese university.

Academic institutions can play an important role in strengthening emergency response capacity by contributing research, training and evidence-based approaches to public health challenges.

The partnership also reflects the growing emphasis on international collaboration in preparing for threats that can cross borders rapidly.

Building stronger response systems

Recent disease outbreaks have highlighted the need for countries to maintain surveillance capabilities, trained health professionals and effective coordination mechanisms.

WHO has continued to promote stronger preparedness as part of its wider global health security efforts. Collaboration with universities and research institutions can help translate scientific knowledge into practical tools for emergency planning and response.

The latest agreement between WHO and Peking University is expected to contribute to these efforts by strengthening cooperation in health emergency preparedness and supporting the development of expertise needed to manage future crises.
