Dr. Farooq calls for united war on Drug abuse

Srinagar, 27 Jun: On the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah called for a united and sustained societal movement against the growing menace of drug abuse, saying the battle cannot be won by the government alone.

Dr. Farooq said that tackling substance abuse is a collective responsibility that demands the active participation of families, educational institutions, religious leaders, civil society organisations, healthcare professionals and the youth themselves.

“The fight against drugs is not the sole prerogative of the government. Every section of society has to come forward to protect our younger generation and reclaim their future. If we fail to act collectively today, we risk losing an entire generation to this deadly menace,” he said.

He stressed that while stringent action against drug traffickers is essential, equal emphasis must be placed on prevention, awareness, counselling, rehabilitation and creating opportunities for young people.

“The stigma surrounding addiction must end. Those battling addiction need compassion, medical care and rehabilitation, while those involved in peddling narcotics must face the full force of the law,” he added.

Dr. Farooq  urged parents to remain vigilant, teachers to identify early warning signs and community leaders to spread awareness against substance abuse. He also appealed to the youth to stay away from drugs and channel their energy towards education, sports, innovation and nation-building.

Reaffirming the National Conference’s commitment to safeguarding the future of Jammu and Kashmir’s youth, Dr. Farooq said that only a united society can defeat the drug menace and build a healthier, stronger and more prosperous Jammu and Kashmir for generations to come.
