India’s MBBS Capacity Rises to 1.39 Lakh Seats in 2026-27

The number of undergraduate medical seats has increased by nearly 48,000 over five years, reflecting the expansion of medical education capacity across the country.

NEW DELHI, Aug 16: India’s total number of MBBS seats has increased to 1,39,489 for the 2026-27 academic year, marking a substantial expansion in the country’s undergraduate medical education capacity.

According to data from the Health Ministry, the number of MBBS seats stood at 99,463 in the 2022-23 academic year. The latest figure represents an addition of 47,886 seats over the past five years.

The expansion is part of the broader effort to increase the availability of medical education and strengthen the country’s healthcare workforce.

The rise in undergraduate medical seats is particularly significant as India continues to focus on improving access to healthcare services across regions. Increasing the number of trained doctors can help address shortages and support the delivery of medical services in underserved areas.

The growth also reflects the expansion of medical colleges and healthcare infrastructure over recent years. More training capacity provides additional opportunities for students seeking medical education while contributing to the long-term availability of qualified healthcare professionals.

The increase in seats comes as the healthcare sector faces growing demand for doctors and specialised medical services. Strengthening medical education capacity is therefore considered an important component of building a larger and more accessible healthcare workforce.

The latest figures also highlight the continuing expansion of India’s medical education system, with authorities seeking to align training capacity with the country’s wider healthcare requirements.

The increase in MBBS seats is expected to provide more opportunities for aspiring doctors and support efforts to improve healthcare delivery in the years ahead.
