NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Railways on Tuesday announced plans to expand the Vande Bharat semi-high-speed train network as part of efforts to modernise India’s transport infrastructure.
Railway officials said several new routes connecting major metropolitan cities and important regional centres would be introduced in the coming months.
The expansion aims to improve travel efficiency, reduce journey time and enhance passenger comfort. According to the ministry, additional train sets are currently under production at manufacturing units in India.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the government is focusing on indigenous technology, modern safety systems and upgraded station infrastructure.
The ministry also reviewed progress on dedicated freight corridors, electrification projects and redevelopment of railway stations under the ongoing modernisation programme.
Passengers travelling on existing Vande Bharat routes have reported improved convenience due to faster travel and upgraded onboard services.
Railway officials stated that priority would be given to routes with high passenger demand and strong economic significance.
The expansion of semi high speed rail services is expected to support tourism, business travel and regional economic development in several states.
