Shivraj Patil, Veteran Congress Leader and Former Union Home Minister, Dies at 90

Five-decade political career marked by dignity, constitutional scholarship and key national roles

New Delhi, Dec 12 : Senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil passed away at his hometown Latur in Maharashtra on Friday morning. Patil, 90, died at his residence ‘Devghar’ after a brief illness.

He is survived by his son Shailesh Patil, daughter-in-law Archana a BJP leader and two granddaughters.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar paid tribute to the veteran leader, saying the nation had lost “a dignified personality.”
“He was a symbol of simplicity and moral values. Throughout his long political career whether as Lok Sabha Speaker, Union Minister, Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly, or Governor of Punjab he consistently upheld ethics in public life,” Pawar said.

A five decade journey in public life

Shivraj Patil served as India’s Union Home Minister from 2004 to 2008, a period that included the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, after which he stepped down from the post.

He earlier served as the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996 and later became the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015.

Born on October 12, 1935, Patil began his political career as municipal council chief in Latur before entering the Maharashtra Assembly in the early 1970s. He went on to win the Latur Lok Sabha seat seven times, becoming one of the region’s most influential leaders. His sole electoral defeat in the constituency came in 2004, when he lost to the BJP’s Rupatai Patil Nilangekar.

Remembered for grace, intellect and constitutional depth

Colleagues described Patil as a leader known for restraint, dignity and meticulous preparation. He avoided personal attacks both in public and private, earning respect across party lines.

He was also admired for his scholarly depth, wide reading habits and command over Marathi, English and Hindi. Party colleagues noted that his articulate style and deep understanding of constitutional matters made him one of the most respected parliamentarians of his time.
