Aizawl (Mizoram), March 6, 2025: In a significant move to enhance digital connectivity in strategically crucial border areas, Amit Sharma, Secretary to the Government, Information & Communications Technology and Cooperation, Mizoram, chaired a high-level meeting to review the status of broadband internet availability along the Indo-Myanmar border. Given Mizoram’s extensive border with Myanmar, the meeting was attended by representatives from Internet Service Providers (ISPs), the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Assam Rifles, and officials from the Home and ICT departments, underscoring the urgency of strengthening digital infrastructure in these sensitive zones.
Amit Sharma, while welcoming the participants, emphasized that the meeting was a continuation of a recent discussion chaired by Chief Secretary Mizoram, Khilli Ram Meena, where directives were issued to assess the current state of internet connectivity at various points along the border. He highlighted the necessity of ensuring seamless broadband services, particularly to regulate the Free Movement Regime (FMR) effectively in real-time. Stressing the critical role of robust digital infrastructure in national security and administrative efficiency, Sharma urged all stakeholders to collaborate in addressing connectivity gaps.
During the deliberations, Sharma called upon ISPs to prioritize national interest over commercial considerations and work towards enabling smooth and uninterrupted bandwidth at key entry and exit points along the Indo-Myanmar border. He reiterated that advanced IT solutions and high-speed internet are vital for ensuring better surveillance, real-time monitoring, and improved governance in the border regions.
The meeting saw active participation from major telecom players, including BSNL, Airtel, and Reliance Jio, who provided insights into the current network coverage and mobile tower installations across 18 designated border points in Champhai, Lawngtlai, Saitual, Serchip, and Siaha districts. Sharma directed the service providers to furnish a detailed status report within the next few days to facilitate the preparation of a comprehensive connectivity plan for submission to higher authorities.
The Assam Rifles team also underscored the importance of reliable internet access at border checkpoints. It highlighted its role in real-time registration of cross-border movements and secure data storage through a specialized National Database software developed by NIC. They noted that the integration of digital tools would significantly enhance border management efficiency and security operations.
The meeting concluded with a consensus among all stakeholders to maintain constant coordination through a dedicated WhatsApp group, ensuring swift follow-ups and expedited resolution of connectivity issues. With Sharma spearheading the initiative, the discussions reflected a proactive approach towards leveraging technology for border security, governance, and regional development.
